The Odd Even Result


In the first 15 days of January, Delhites have gone through, a much-hyped, odd even formula. They were overwhelmed by the desire to secure the future of next generation as they were told about. That may be the reason why they have obeyed the rule without moving toward Jantar Mantar in protest. The idea was not innovative but taken from Beijing which also depleted its air quality to the extremes. But it seems that the scheme was imported only for his political campaign of a man called Kejriwal. Perhaps it is the only major work done by Kejriwal's government apart from blaming the centre and his neighbour for obstructing in the Delhi government's endeavour. And that is why they are so touchy about this scheme.

With the completion of the odd even trial, Delhi government, without wasting time, claimed that it has successfully reduced the air pollution level in Delhi. But, there is no credible data to back this claim.

The idea to exempt women drivers and two-wheelers from odd-even rule was a complete debacle. According to the IIT, Kanpur report on the sources of particulate matter finds that vehicles contribute to 20 percent of PM2.5 concentration. And among vehicles, trucks and two-wheelers together contribute to 80 percent of pollution and four wheelers (Cars, SUVs) 10 percent amounting to only 2 percent contribution in the air pollution. Other similar reports also make it clear that Cars are not the major polluters. Despite all of these data, reported at the very beginning of odd-even, Delhi government kept a blind eye to them and implemented odd-even rule only to the four-wheelers.

We have many political parties in India such as caste-based parties, pseudo secular parties, communal parties, and many others but we don't have a green party. Why? Because we don't bother about environmental issues and if there is no vote bank, there cannot be a political party around it. The air of Delhi is a result of several decades and can't be improved overnight. We need a comprehensive planning to handle this issue. The odd-even rule can't actually improve the air quality of Delhi. And seriously, why to import ideas from foreign countries, can't we make our own? After all, there is Make In India programme going on here, right?

The Aam Aadmi Party must be congratulated for one reason that, they have actually done something to improve Delhi's air. Even if they have not succeeded in improving Delhi's air, which was obvious, they have shown the world that India, too, is concerned about air pollution. Political parties and most importantly, citizens have to come together to improve Delhi's air. We can't expect for a miracle that Lord Vishnu will come on this earth again to save us from a monster who is polluting the air. In this case, we are the monster ourselves.

    This experiment was a good idea. Having seen its effect on roads in a) lesser traffic & b) lesser/ drive time on road & c) lesser vehicular pollution I feel it should be made permanent without exceptions & including two wheelers. It needs to be tried in all metro cities.

      Sir, First the government needs to strengthen public transports, after that, it may be implemented in other places, without making it a political campaign of any particular party. But Odd Even certainly cannot be the only permanent method to reduce air pollution substantially. Thanks!

      Thanks! Yeah, at least we are concerned about it! Hope our policy makers and scientists come with some concrete plans, which can be applied everywhere,to reduce air pollution.

    I really wonder what makes you say this idea was imported only for political campaign.
    Did you even go on the roads and see how it was? And in actual it was useful because a lot of people took to car pooling due to this and they are still doing it.

    And as far as 'Make in India' campaign is concerned, have you really stopped using everything that's not Indian, really?

      Haven't you seen the effigy and posters of Kejriwal Ji regarding Odd Even Scheme everywhere in Delhiand received the call "Hello! Mai Kejriwal Bol raha hoon"??
      Cars are not the major polluters so carpooling cannot solve the problem though it may reduce air pollution marginally.
      And, the 'Make In India' project is not a boycott movement that we should stop using foreign products. It is about calling foreign companies to set up industries in India and providing good atmosphere to boost existing Indian companies.

Gangubai - The Oldest but Youngest Sarpanch of Pune

Gangubai Nivrutte Bhambure gets up at 5 am to do household chores. She is a 94-year-young sarpanch of Bhamburwadi village and holds the distinction of becoming oldest sarpanch in Pune district.
