JNU - A Vision of Modern Democratic India

Through the ongoing controversy what we need to understand is that ours is a young nation still in the making which has all the ingredients to become truly a great nation, but it needs time. Give this nation that time, that gestation period and it will show the world the true meaning of greatness, one which is home to a complete spectrum of diverse culture but still thrives together with immeasurable amount of tolerance which has never been experienced anywhere else (this holds for the common citizens of India but unfortunately not for the practitioners of divisive vote-bank politics which they don’t find anti-national).

JNU

Every powerful nation that exists today has gone through some sort of civil war which led to enormous violence and bloodshed. We too have our share of challenges; be it the Kashmir issue, Nagaland or Naxalism; but we have the opportunity to show the world that we can do it in a better way without any bloodshed. It is that unity in diversity that is the soul of the very idea of India. But during this journey, we need to heed to those voices of dissent without ridiculing them and bring them to the table for discussion. We need to give them that space to freely express their views and try to take them along in our incredible journey. We do need to preserve the unity and integrity of the country no matter what but if there are better ways available to deal with those dissenting voices then why suppress them? This is the message JNU has to give to the nation.

As an institution, JNU has contributed a lot in nation building since the very time of its inception and it will continue to do so. What needs to be understood is that JNU is perhaps the only institution remained in the country where left ideology still thrives. Therefore it always remains on the radar screen of the right-wing ideologues. Now, there are some rabid fringe elements everywhere in the country and JNU is not an exception to this but the liberal culture in JNU provide them with the opportunity to raise their voice. And because of these few people who have no support base, the right-wing got the opportunity to use these fringe elements to bring the whole institution and by default its ideological opposition down. JNU is continuously fighting the ideological battle and it will continue to do so. It cannot be discredited just because the major critiques of the ruling dispensation are coming out of JNU. The left ideology should not be confused with a misguided rebellion but as an idea whose primary motive is to bring justice to the downtrodden and underprivileged sections of the society.

Coming to the Kashmir issue, Kashmir is one such issue which needs a thorough discussion involving all the concerned parties so that the future of Kashmir could be safeguarded and the university is such a place of debate and dissent through which new ideas take shape.  This is what happened in JNU that night and for those sloganeering Kashmiri youths ‘’Bharat’’ might have simply meant men-in-uniform with weapons imposing AFSPA (which can never be a solution) and the act has received criticism from several sections for alleged concerns about human rights violations in the regions of its enforcement. ‘’Kashmir Ki Azadi’’ might have meant freedom of Kashmir from AFSPA. And as far as patriotism of Kashmiris is concerned, just because of a few, the entire citizenry can’t be doubted. I am sure, they feel as proud as us being an Indian and fully aware of the fact that the best interest of Kashmir lies with India.

I have never been to Kashmir and so not fully aware of the ground reality there and therefore hope that the officials holding office under an oath of allegiance to the Indian Constitution would enforce the ethos of the constitution and do their best to maintain the unity and integrity of the country and at the same time allow the universities to do what they are meant for. And while striking a balance between these if it is felt that the constitutional rights have been abused they should ensure that the actual perpetrators are punished through a fair trial as the nation is above all and must not suffer between this never-ending clash of ideas and a wrong message is not sent out to the countrymen.

And in the midst of all these, a great institution with the vision of a fearless modern democratic India has to be preserved.

Long live JNU and its culture, a culture that embraces critical thinking, democratic dissent, student activism, and the plurality of political beliefs for which an open, tolerant, and democratic society is inextricably linked to critical thought and expression.

It’s time to remember Rabindranath Tagore:

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, Let my country awake.”

  1. It is sad that forces which are not respecting judicial system are teaching patriotism to others, freedom of speech should be respected, those who criticize wants a spotless nation than those who for their political leaders do unconstitutional things

My views on the issue :Anti-National Patriots

Bihar Liquor Ban - The Political Perspective

Whether you call it Nitish Kumar's masterstroke for gaining publicity and support of people or a responsible chief minister batting for people's interests, on the face of it, it is great that Bihar is free from alcohol abuse. The Bihar excise (amendment) act, 2016 – a very old 1915 act has been converted into a very stringent law – is haunting the alcohol gang of Bihar. This law banned manufacturing, selling or consumption of liquors (strong or mild) and even prescribes the death penalty for the manufacturer, suppliers and sellers of hooch in case of death as a result of consumption of spurious liquors. Although Biharis can drink outside state boundary, they'll be punished if they create nuisance after returning home. The government had actually proposed to ban only 'desi' liquors. The sale of non-country or ‘Indian Made Foreign Liquor’ (IMFL) was allowed, although, with some caveats. However, within five days, the government extended the ban to IMFL as w...

Bihar Liquor Ban - Alcoholism and Society

Disclaimer : No alcohol has been used during the writing of this post. I don't know why I didn't cover this story earlier. Probably because on this topic, I didn't want to write in haste and as sayings go “better late than never”, I came up with this post. And while writing this article, sometimes I felt an alcoholic haze, that is why you should read this carefully! Let us begin with the definition of 'Alcoholism'. Casually, the process of consuming alcoholic drinks is called alcoholism. But, to be precise, alcoholism is a medical condition in which there is an abnormal addiction to alcohol, and taking it in small quantity very occasionally is not. Simply put, if you can live without alcohol, you are not an alcoholic. “Alcoholism is the effect of excessive intake of alcohol on the functions of the body and personality.” ~ W.C. Reckless “Alcoholism is a condition in which the individual has lost control over his alcohol intake in that he is constantl...

The Magical Castle - Unravelling The Myth

One day, Peter and team decided to give a final try and search the deepest part of the sea. Sadie noticed that there was a large number of aquatic animals moving in and out of a particular place. On further inquiry, she saw a castle, yes it was the magical castle. She felt immense pleasure to see it. She also saw a whale there. She informed Peter about this. Peter and John came there with swords and harpoon, hidden with them. They sent Sadie back to the ship for her safety. As they move forward, Octo uncle saw them and he at once spilled ink as a mark of danger to alert everyone there. Then, came the orca out of the ink to attack them. They moved back in three different directions. The orca chose John and started chasing him. John realised that he can't swim faster than a Whale. So, he aimed the harpoon towards Orca and shot it one after another. This made the orca even more aggressive. John realised that it is his last breath when the aggressive whale was mere 2 ft distance fro...

Why Religion Should Not Be Downplayed

When you were a child and your parents told you stories about god, you listened to that with great curiosity and excitement, but as you grow older and started seeing everything with the rational eye of science, you realise that it was a lie, and so every religious event and ritual appears to you as an act of stupidity. Still, you keep worshipping the men or women whom you were told to worship as Gods. Why? Have you considered what is the significance of religion? Religion teaches us that God has created this universe and he is running it in his own way. The Sun, The Moon, Stars, Planets, Living creatures  — bacteria, viruses, plants, animals, humans are all the creation of God. We are just doing things ordained by him. It may appear that we are influencing things, but the reality is we, ourselves, are influenced by some heavenly forces. Indians, especially Hindus, are obsessed with rituals and other religious activities like holding fast and going to temple. Some of ...

FATHERS DAY SPECIAL

I have decided to write about the incredible Father-Children relationship on the occasion of father's day. I can't decide what to write on the topic that is so much related to my heart. I belong to the country which believes that our parents are equivalent to God and I am very proud of it. Whenever I remember my childhood my mind becomes full of incredible moments that I have spent with my parents especially my father I contribute this blog to children who are not fully mature and consider their parents as their enemy only because they care for them and love them so much that they can't fulfil their immature promises. Dear children Remember no one will better take care of you better than your parents will, so never ever consider your father or your mother as your enemy and love them and obey them. So if your dad asks you to hold his hand when you cross the street it's because he knows it can be dangerous because of all the cars. It's also why sometimes dad h...

The Brand Amma - Social Work or Self Promotion

J Jayalalithaa, the actress turned Chief minister of Tamil Nadu was given the nickname " Amma " by her followers comparing to or assuming her Amma (Mother). But, she developed this nickname to be the biggest brand in Tamil Nadu, the “Amma brand”. Despite having no market value of this brand, it has a very significant value for the people of Tamil Nadu, especially the poor and the have-nots. For them, she is the goddess who is not only filling their hungry stomach but also providing them almost all basic items necessary for living a decent life (including some luxurious items too). After becoming CM, the major work Jayalalithaa's government has done is providing subsidy and freebies to the people. For instance, subsidized cheap food at canteen, packaged water, pharmacy bill, cement, free rice, free mixer grinder, spectacles, mobiles, laptops, bicycles, etc. all under brand "Amma" and at the price no other shopkeepers, manufacturers or the e-commerce compan...
