The Chennai Rain Story

Chennai:

It's raining! What a pleasant weather! It's tea-pakoda or at least idli-sambhar time! Perhaps this was the reaction of people of Chennai when they are unaware of the devastation that this rain is going to cause. But soon there was waterlogging everywhere in the city and water level in the river rose above the danger mark. The whole city is endangered with the risk of floods. The pleasant weather is no longer enjoyed by anyone. Everyone is just praying to the god to stop the rain. But the rain didn't stop and now water is overflowing with water bodies towards the city. A Man shouted in the Tamil language which means "bhaago paani aa raha hai". It created a situation of panic among the people. People inside their homes could hear the loud splash of water and other people's voices. They came out of their house to check what's going on and found the water is coming towards their house or has already entered. People above the ground floor looks confused whether to go up or down. As per situation, some preferred to abandon their homes and move to a safe place by treading water while others went to the roof of their houses. In the course of moving through water, many of them drifted away by the water currents. People are becoming desperate as rain continued and consequently water level rising day by day. Stress, hunger and anxiety can be noticed on everyone's face who are stranded. The kids are crying making the situation worse. This is also giving rise to irrational but relevant thoughts like “This flood is the consequence of human sins”, “God is being very unfair to us”, etc. The NDRF team begins the rescue operations. After some moment the entire city is overlapped with water. The transportation is completely blocked as the railway tracks and runways are under water. The boat is functional on the roads instead of cars, bikes or buses.

The situation is going out of state's hands and thus the central government intervene and deploys Army, Airforce and Navy personnel in the rescue operation. With the aid of the heroes of India, hundreds of people are being rescued. Now people can see a "ray of hope" whenever they find a chopper flying above them or see a brave man in an army uniform is coming to save them. Well, the job of our armed forces is not rescuing people during natural disasters but they are doing this because they are capable of doing that and also find this as their moral duty to save lives of people who are dying. They did it during Kedarnath tragedy, Kashmir floods, Nepal earthquake, and now in Chennai rains. So we can say that our Army is the real "sankat mochan".

I also find there is a need to answer the irrational thought "This flood is the consequence of human sins". What are the human sins? Why did this unseasonal and unprecedented rain occur that led to floods? Well, I can't define the sins. But to answer why this kind of floods came in Chennai, we have to look it through a scientific glass. We are developing ourselves at an increasingly high rate. That's good, isn't it? Because of the development, the agricultural or spongy lands are being lost every day. The water absorbing capacity of the soil is decreasing and that is why we see even a small amount of rain causes waterlogging which did not use to happen if we go back 10 years. We are also preferring water repellent roads, buildings, etc. If there were no gravity we would have stop water in the mid-air! Obviously, we cannot stop our developmental programs but what we need is a scientific research in finding the eco-friendly way of developing our society. This is a great opportunity for scientists and entrepreneurs!

    1. People should take this as a nightmare and move on. But the government must take appropriate measures so that such incidents can be avoided in future.

FATHERS DAY SPECIAL

I have decided to write about the incredible Father-Children relationship on the occasion of father's day. I can't decide what to write on the topic that is so much related to my heart. I belong to the country which believes that our parents are equivalent to God and I am very proud of it. Whenever I remember my childhood my mind becomes full of incredible moments that I have spent with my parents especially my father I contribute this blog to children who are not fully mature and consider their parents as their enemy only because they care for them and love them so much that they can't fulfil their immature promises. Dear children Remember no one will better take care of you better than your parents will, so never ever consider your father or your mother as your enemy and love them and obey them. So if your dad asks you to hold his hand when you cross the street it's because he knows it can be dangerous because of all the cars. It's also why sometimes dad h...

Bihar Liquor Ban - The Political Perspective

Whether you call it Nitish Kumar's masterstroke for gaining publicity and support of people or a responsible chief minister batting for people's interests, on the face of it, it is great that Bihar is free from alcohol abuse. The Bihar excise (amendment) act, 2016 – a very old 1915 act has been converted into a very stringent law – is haunting the alcohol gang of Bihar. This law banned manufacturing, selling or consumption of liquors (strong or mild) and even prescribes the death penalty for the manufacturer, suppliers and sellers of hooch in case of death as a result of consumption of spurious liquors. Although Biharis can drink outside state boundary, they'll be punished if they create nuisance after returning home. The government had actually proposed to ban only 'desi' liquors. The sale of non-country or ‘Indian Made Foreign Liquor’ (IMFL) was allowed, although, with some caveats. However, within five days, the government extended the ban to IMFL as w...

Beat The Lost Growth In Your Child With Horlick Growth+

Children are building blocks for a healthy society. They must grow to their full capacities. To carry the responsibility of human species on their shoulders and to take it to a next level, they must be developed strong, vigorous and healthy both physically and psychologically. Children are curious by nature. This curiosity must be nurtured. It is the quality that churns out great scientists, doctors, engineers, teachers, writers, etc. This curiosity brings innovation and creative ideas, essential for a progressive society, make our life easier and this world a better place to live in. All parents want to see their children in a healthy state. They leave no stone unturned to keep them strong, healthy and full of curiosity. Often, they get the results. But, in certain cases, their children fall behind on growth. They do not show the symptoms of growth. They do not attain right weight and height as per the age. And, as a result of retarded growth, they do not show curiosity for le...

Bihar Liquor Ban - Alcoholism and Society

Disclaimer : No alcohol has been used during the writing of this post. I don't know why I didn't cover this story earlier. Probably because on this topic, I didn't want to write in haste and as sayings go “better late than never”, I came up with this post. And while writing this article, sometimes I felt an alcoholic haze, that is why you should read this carefully! Let us begin with the definition of 'Alcoholism'. Casually, the process of consuming alcoholic drinks is called alcoholism. But, to be precise, alcoholism is a medical condition in which there is an abnormal addiction to alcohol, and taking it in small quantity very occasionally is not. Simply put, if you can live without alcohol, you are not an alcoholic. “Alcoholism is the effect of excessive intake of alcohol on the functions of the body and personality.” ~ W.C. Reckless “Alcoholism is a condition in which the individual has lost control over his alcohol intake in that he is constantl...

The Brand Amma - Social Work or Self Promotion

J Jayalalithaa, the actress turned Chief minister of Tamil Nadu was given the nickname " Amma " by her followers comparing to or assuming her Amma (Mother). But, she developed this nickname to be the biggest brand in Tamil Nadu, the “Amma brand”. Despite having no market value of this brand, it has a very significant value for the people of Tamil Nadu, especially the poor and the have-nots. For them, she is the goddess who is not only filling their hungry stomach but also providing them almost all basic items necessary for living a decent life (including some luxurious items too). After becoming CM, the major work Jayalalithaa's government has done is providing subsidy and freebies to the people. For instance, subsidized cheap food at canteen, packaged water, pharmacy bill, cement, free rice, free mixer grinder, spectacles, mobiles, laptops, bicycles, etc. all under brand "Amma" and at the price no other shopkeepers, manufacturers or the e-commerce compan...

Teachers Or Cheaters

We are quite aware with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's slogan of "minimum government-maximum governance". It is one of the agenda of Modi during his campaign in 2014 general election. The place where this needs to be implemented the most is government elementary schools with slight modification as "minimum teachers-maximum teachings". Without any doubt, the government school teachers are the biggest cheaters and a burden on the economy. The salary of the government teachers is much higher than the private sector teachers (In UP, the difference is 20 times). But rather than working harder and better, the government teachers are often seen "missing in action". Karthik Muralidharan's 2014 study estimates an absence rate of 23.6 percent. When they are present, they spend much of their time in non-teaching activities or teaching with little professional competence, and exercise little effort. Some teachers don't even see for six months but d...

The Magical Castle - Unravelling The Myth

One day, Peter and team decided to give a final try and search the deepest part of the sea. Sadie noticed that there was a large number of aquatic animals moving in and out of a particular place. On further inquiry, she saw a castle, yes it was the magical castle. She felt immense pleasure to see it. She also saw a whale there. She informed Peter about this. Peter and John came there with swords and harpoon, hidden with them. They sent Sadie back to the ship for her safety. As they move forward, Octo uncle saw them and he at once spilled ink as a mark of danger to alert everyone there. Then, came the orca out of the ink to attack them. They moved back in three different directions. The orca chose John and started chasing him. John realised that he can't swim faster than a Whale. So, he aimed the harpoon towards Orca and shot it one after another. This made the orca even more aggressive. John realised that it is his last breath when the aggressive whale was mere 2 ft distance fro...
